How to motivate disaffected students to work hard?

Children Sitting on Brown Chairs Inside the Classroom

Small kids are always highly energetic, and they love all physical activities rather than sitting in a place. It’s very hard for them to sit and concentrate on one thing. The studies need concentration and internal effort to understand the concepts. But can we expect concentration from small kids? Well, I would say no as it’s hard for them to concentrate. Yes, if the child is studious and very calm in nature, then he/she can sit and concentrate. Here our point of concern are the kids who are not able to concentrate in studies and are not able to do well.

How can we help such kids to concentrate and, more importantly, to love studies? Below are some points which would help our kids to concentrate and learn.

Interaction with teachers and parents

Interaction between the child and caregiver is very important, be it a parent or teacher. It is important for teachers and parents to know the level of intelligence a child has and the way they are going to deliver knowledge to them. Sometimes, for some kids, oral conversation works better than reading and writing.

Engaging Classes

Students get bored if they are only passed with information. The idea here is to make kids understand what is being taught in the class and also to create interests in them. Mere passing of information won’t create interests in them, and they might lose concentration. Teachers should keep these scenarios in mind while preparing the lesson plan, i.e., along with teaching what they are going to do to emerge interest in the class.

Creating or developing interest is not a difficult task at all. After reading the lesson, we can call upon students to act as well as read the story. Some spelling can be given to them to learn during the class, and then the whole class can be divided into teams to play the game called spell bee. It’s often seen that students struggle to remember the spelling, but when they play in a team and spell the word, it remains in their mind for ever.

Relatable topics

Relating the topic with some movie or to some real-life event always creates interest in students. Students can be asked to brainstorm and speak about any related event which might have taken place in their life. This not only helps to create interest, but students also learn to analyse things.

Science classes and Maths classes are something which I can say. But if a child is only given information without giving examples, it won’t be possible for him/her to understand it clearly. Science topics always need examples. If you are teaching about different types of roots, ask the child to bring their own roots and reflect on them.

Team work

Group projects can be assigned which need to be completed in groups. This would even force a lazy child to do their work as their friends would encourage them to do so. Projects helps to understand the concept as well as develops the skill to work in a group.

Teachers should refrain from simply completing the syllabus and try to clear the concepts. Schools should not over burden kids with a huge syllabus. Age appropriate topics and quantity of topics should be kept in mind while creating the syllabus.
